Tannat wine. Here in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains the terrain is rough and rugged so it is only fitting that Tannat should create wines which are equally deep dark dry and rustic. The fact that Tannat grapes contain 5 seeds pips compared to 2 or 3 for most other varieties also adds to tannin levels. Tannat wines have been made in the Madiran region in South West France since the 17th century when French kings accepted Madiran wines as payment for taxes.

Tannat Wine Tannat is a red-wine grape whose origins lie in the Basque country on the border between France and Spain. They maintain power structure and complexity but roll back the frisky acidity and heavy-handed fruit profile. The grape probably originated in the Basque country and almost certainly derives its French name from its high tannin levels.
